Thrissur: Aminakutty’s son Haneefa is now regularly at the Dubai hospital with Baputty. Trying to piece together his story, Abdul Rasaq Thazepady of Chavakkad said Baputty took a ship to Duabi from Mumbai. “I was then working in Dubai as a cargo assistant in the port. I helped him find a job there. We used to meet in Dubai for a few years. On being asked about his return to Chavakkad, he would clam up”, said Abdul Rasaq.
And this brings us back to the old question: Why did this man live anonymously all these years?Baputty’s nephew is as sure as his life that the man called Abdulla Punathil Usman, a diabetic, who is being treated for an infected leg in the Dubai Hospital is his mother Aminakutty’s younger brother.
From the bits and scraps Baputty has been letting out, it seems that somewhere around 1974-75, he reached Dubai on a ship from Mumbai, with a valid visa and was in touch with this family for two years before his disappearing act.
According to a report, Baputty’s friend Abdul Gafoor Baputty worked in Arab’s house in Hor al Anz area in Dubai. But Baputty was never interested in discussing his kin back home. He had his own moniker, “Abdulla from Malappuram”.Baputty’s most bizarre part is he has no idea of changes overtaken Dubai. He does not know what Burj Khalifa is. But it’s been confirmed he worked and lived at the Arab’s house these years.
Reliable sources said Baputty’s employer was an old woman. She used to treat him well. It was he who did not want to go anywhere else. He never asked for a raise, never wanted to see the world outside and never asked to go home.
