Federation demands CM to honour his promise made to Kurnool people
kurnool: A five-day protest is organised from October 21 – 24 by the Federation of Muslim Associations, Kurnool district to oppose the shifting of a proposed Urdu University from Ku-rnool town to Kadapa by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.“On August 15th, Chand-rababu Naidu promised to build a Urdu University in Kurnool town. It was one of the gifts he bestowed on Kurnool. But all of a sudden, he shifted its location from Kurnool town to Kadapa during the Asse-mbly sessions. We protest this unexpected turnaround and demand its restoration to Kurnool,” said M.A. Hameed, co-convener of the movement and a social activist.
Kurnool district has the highest Muslim population in Andhra Pradesh state, before bifurcation of the united AP, it was second to Hyderabad. Anwar Basha, correspondent of Crescent school and a protester said, “Kurnool is located in the proximity of next highest Muslim populated districts in Andhra Pra-desh like Guntur, Kadapa and Anantapur. Hence, all the departments and of-fices connected to Muslim welfare and protection should be based in Kurnool.”
The protesters are demanding that the following departments and offices must be located in Kurnool: Wakf Tribunal, Minority Finance Corpo-ration, addition of Urdu and Arabic departments in Rayalaseema Unive-rsity and the Urdu Unive-rsity promised by Chand-rababu Naidu.“Kurnool has 52 dargahs, madrasas, Abdul Wahab Khan Gumbaz on the banks of Handri river, Osmania college, Urdu Arabic college, Hazira college, Unani medical college, Government Urdu high school and Govern-ment girls Urdu school. Even education wise it is well placed,” opined civil contractor CMD Ilyas.
Mr Ilyas exuded confidence that Kurnool can be developed as the Islamic cultural centre of AP.“Kurnool has 450 years of Islamic heritage, the last Kurnool nawab fought with the British at Johrapuram.”He added that people felt happy when Naidu announced his decision without anyone asking for the Urdu University but his volte-face disappointed people.
