Tamil Nadu’s rainfall more than double of normal
Chennai: The city continued to receive widespread rainfall on Monday, with Nungambakkam recording 31.3 mm and Meenambakkam 18.5 mm till 6.30 pm.
According to data available from the website of the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, so far this month, Chennai has received 260.6 mm rainfall, much more than the 132.3 mm that it was due to get. The state’s overall rainfall measurement stands at 137 mm, exceeding the 111.3 mm, which is normal.
The Met department, however, has predicted that rainfall activity will gradually subside over the course of the week. “We expect comparatively less rainfall in the coming days due to changing atmospheric conditions, but then, this is just the start of the North East Monsoon,” said S. B. Thampi, deputy director general, Indian Meteorological Department.
Meanwhile, the onset of the northeast monsoon has taken a heavy toll even as it intensified across Tamil Nadu, claiming as many as 13 lives in three days. According to the police the fatalities were due mainly to lightning and thunder besides electrocution and sudden floods.
In Chennai, two persons were electrocuted in the last two days.
“Flash floods in rivers claimed at least three in south Tamil Nadu. Two persons were washed away in a river flood in Tirunelveli and another person drowned in a river in Kanyakumari,” police said here. Others were struck by lightning in different incidents, the police noted.
