Coimbatore tanks full, sluices opened

The sluice gates of the overflowing Muthannakulam tank were opened on Monday
Coimbatore: Following the torrential rains that lashed the city on Sunday, the sluice gates of the overflowing Muthannakulam tank were opened on Monday. The gates were opened on the orders of the Corporation Commissioner S. Ganesan in time to prevent houses in the vicinity of the tank being submerged in flood waters.
Mayor P Rajkumar said the decision to open the sluices averted what could have been a major problem. The excess water is being drained into the Selvachintamani tank. But, since the Selvachintamani tank has also been overflowing, the sluice of that tank has also been opened and the water is being drained into the Periyakulam tank, he said.
With rains pounding Coimbatore, the district administration had declared a holiday for all the schools and colleges on Monday. According to a release from the district administration, the staff members are in a state of preparedness to tackle the monsoon.
As the meteorological department has predicted heavy rains, the corporation is gearing up to ensure that there is less public inconvenience due to road inundations and flooding under flyovers, an official said.
A part of the compound wall of a house in Ammankulam collapsed following the rains on Sunday. The residents of the house, Selvaraj, his wife and his two children were at home when the wall collapsed.
