IIT-M students run for transgenders
The run was a part of their annual festival Samanvay 2014
Chennai: Students of the department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology – Madras (IIT-M) on Sunday organised ‘Transcend’, a run for the social cause of creating awareness about the rights of transgenders, as a part of its annual management festival Samanvay 2014. In all, 200 students from the college took part in the event. “Associating transgenders with accosting and sex work is a social evil that should be removed.
Transgender people should also stop begging since they are respectable,” said Ms Kalki Subramaniam, founder, Sahodari Foundation, an NGO that aims at eradicating discrimination in society against transgenders.
She gave the runners an orientation on the problems faced by transgenders in society and enlightened them on the purpose of the run.A five-year-old child, who listened to the orientation, was inspired to fight for the cause. She took part in the run along with the other students of IIT-M in the 5-km run. Participants were given certificates for their social responsibility and the winner awarded with a bicycle worth Rs20,000.
