Power cuts to hit purchase
CCI fears ginning, pressing of cotton would get delayed
ADILABAD: The erratic power supply is likely to hit cotton purchase to be taken up by the Cotton Commission of India (CCI) from October 20 in Adilabad district. Cotton would be bought at the market yards in Adilabad, Mancherial, Bhainsa and Jainoor.
Power purchase has already been delayed for 15 days in the district and in the given situation, it is doubtful if the buying by the CCI would continue without any obstruction till the end of the season.
Once cotton is bought from the farmers, the CCI shifts the produce to private ginning and pressing factories with which it has undergone lease agreements where the crop is turned into bales. The CCI does not have its own pressing and ginning factories.
The pressing and ginning machines operate with the help of electricity. It is feared that the existing power crisis might hit ginning and pressing of cotton, which might have an affect on the buying process.
Cotton bought should be made into bales and sent to the textile factories. It can’t be kept raw in ginning factories for long as it would affect the moisture content and also occupy more space.
Meanwhile, private traders are not ready to lift cotton at Rs 4,050 MSP announced by the central government. Collector M.Jagan Mohan promised the CCI officials to discuss the issue with the top of officials of Transco.
He even promised that the district administration will bear the expenditure to be incurred for running generators at the ginning factories, in case of shortage of power supply.
Adilabad marketing assistant director T. Srinivas informed that the CCI, Adilabad branch, has taken 43 private ginning and pressing factories on lease this season at 20 places. Of them, 14 are in and around Adilabad town.
