Manikrao Thakre resigns after Congress loses
‘Congress will be keeping a watch on the BJP to see if it keeps its words’

Mumbai: Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Manikrao Thakre on Sunday accepted defeat in the Maharashtra Assembly elections and said he had tendered his resignation to All India Congress Committee president Mrs Sonia Gandhi, taking responsibility for the defeat.
Addressing a press conference, Mr Thakre said his party lost the elections because it fell short of demonstrating to the public the work it had done so far for the progress of the state and the schemes introduced for the common man.
“The BJP used different media for campaigning and misled the people with false promises and claimed that the Congress had done nothing till date and public bought their claim,” he alleged.
He also said that winning election on lies and empty promises was one thing and keeping these promises another. “So, Congress will be keeping a watch on the BJP to see if it keeps its words,” he said.
‘’Voting percentage in favour of Congress and NCP has gone up a bit in the Assembly elections as compared to the Lok Sabha election. But the percentage of votes in favour of Shiv Sena and MNS has gone down drastically, which shows that public still has faith in the Congress,’’ he claimed.
He added that the party would hold a meeting soon to assess its mistakes and to find out where they fell short.
Mr Thakre also made it clear that the Congress would never compromise with its views and it was not trying to stay in power by forming alliances with a party that had a different ideology. He said, “‘It is not necessary that our party will be the Opposition party. But if we do sit in the Opposition, we will do our duty with full responsibility.’’
When asked if Adarsh Society scam played a role in the Congress’ defeat, he said that all party leaders had got a clean chit in the matter, so the issue could not have made any impact on voters.
