State Womens Comission to conduct betrothal of girl
The event will take place at Mary Queen of Peace Basilica at Palayam
Thiruvananthapuram: The State Women’s Commission will organise the betrothal of a girl with much fanfare at Mary Queen of Peace Basilica at Palayam here at 11 a.m. on Monday.
However, it is alleged that the SWC which has campaigned for simple, dowry-free marriages has strayed from its principles, as the bride, Raji Mol, has already got 10 sovereigns of gold.
An inhabitant of the Short Stay Home, Raji Mol, 21, has been working at SWC on daily wages. According to Prasanna Kumar, SWC secretary, this is the second time the SWC is hosting a betrothal ceremony ahead of the marriage. During the time of former SWC chairperson, Justice D. Sreedevi, a similar event had taken place.“Raji Mol has second class in B.Com and the groom, Bencylal, is working as a plumbing contractor in Bengaluru. SWC and Lions Club have decided to give 10 sovereigns of gold to the bride. The marriage has been fixed for November 10 and we hope another two more sovereigns could be collected before the marriage,” said Prasanna Kumar.
A government source said that the SWC should have organised a simple marriage when the government itself was going through a lean financial phase. “We have come to know that the SWC chairperson herself sent out letters to various businessmen seeking gold and accessories for the marriage,” said the source.
According to the betrothal invitation, Bencylal belongs to Lal Bhavanam at Karthikapally in Alappuzha district and is the son of K. S. Baby and Mary Kutty. SWC chairperson K. C. Rosakutty and other officials are expected to attend the function where biriyani will be served to the guests.
