SFI activists plan to occupy CU hostels

Students continued their agitation late into Saturday night
Kozikhode: The week-long strike by SFI and KSU students on the Calicut University campus, blaming authorities for poor hostel facilities, is likely to intensify further with the SFI planning to occupy hostels on Monday. Already affairs of three major universities- Kerala and Calicut and the Cochin University of Science and Technology- have been caught in a bind. On Saturday, students laid siege to the official residence of Calicut University Vice Chancellor A Abdul Slam, resulting in police action.
Students continued their agitation late into Saturday night after talks with a syndicate subcommittee remained deadlocked.SFI students would forcibly enter hostels, defying the VC’s orders to down shutters. Many students have been sleeping in classrooms at night for want of room in hostels. Some students had barged into hostels a few days back.
In another development, Calicut University authorities suspended the syndicate membership of Mr T N Prathapan, MLA, for being absent from three consecutive meetings but later the order was frozen by the university.
A copy of the suspension order, signed by the registrar, was circulated among reporters. However, the registrar later clarified that it was withheld as Mr Prathapan had submitted a leave letter from meetings as he was tied up with work as a legislator. The order stands cancelled, the registrar said.
