Helpline launched for Sumangali scheme staff
CSED launched on Saturday a helpline to extend a helping hand to adolescent girls
Coimbatore: The Centre for Social Education and Development (CSED) launched on Saturday a helpline to extend a helping hand to adolescent girls and women who face harassment in textile units in Tirupur and Coimbatore.
Around 2.7 lakh workers are employed in spinning mills and apparel units under the Sumangali scheme in entire Tamil Nadu. The mills hire young girls under the scheme, promising to give a good amount to meet their marriage expenses after a stipulated period.
But some textile units tend to exploit the girls in different ways. The adolescent girls and women who face different sorts of harassment by their employers in textile mills can call the toll free number 1800 425 1092 and report the matter.
"We will take up the matter with the government and do the needful to rescue them. Mills exploit girls and women employed under the scheme with long hours of work, low wages, and non-adherence to labour laws and lack of welfare measures for the workers," said Mr C. Nambi, executive director of CSED.
The toll-free number was launched at a function in Coimbatore on Saturday. The organisation has decided to paste 10,000 posters and 20,000 stickers to publicise its initiative.
It has also come out with a DVD on the Sumangali scheme issue. "We are planning to distribute around 1,000 DVDs to schools and panchayats in villages to create awareness among villagers on the scheme," he said.
