Heavy rains continue to lash Kovai

30 cases of power breakdowns recorded
Coimbatore: Normal life was disrupted as heavy rains lashing Coimbatore for the last few days led to water stagnation and power breakdowns in several parts of the city.
Arterial roads were flooded, while there was water stagnation in subways and under the flyovers across the district. As there was water stagnation beneath Avinashi Road flyover, vehicle-users could not use the underpass, and instead had to go over the flyover, which led to traffic jams.
Vehicles moved at snail's pace, particularly during evening peak hours. Pedestrians had to wade and vehicle drivers had to negotiate pools of water at Sengupta Street junction in Ram Nagar.
Similar was the scene even in posh Race Course area and at Lakshmi Mills’ junction. The stretch from Ramanathapuram to Puliakulam also turned into a slushy puddle due to the heavy rains. Vehicle-riders had a tough time due to heavy traffic on the North Coimbatore flyover, Dr Nanjappa road, Trichy road and Oppanakkara street.
The rains and winds also led to power breakdowns in Coimbatore. "Usually we receive less than ten calls a day on disruption of power due to electric wire snaps. On Friday, from morning to evening, we received more than 30 calls. Our staff were on their toes attending to emergency situations," said a Tangedco official.
Prof S. Panneer Selvam, head of the agro climate research centre of TNAU, said rainfall across the state was due to a trough in the Bay of Bengal along the Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coasts.
"The northeast monsoon has almost begun and rains will continue in the coming days too," he said.
