Hyderabad: Syed Salahuddin Ahmed, the former president of banned extremist outfit Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), was killed in a road mishap at Chityal in Nalgonda district of Telangana in the early hours of Saturday.
Salahuddin was accused in the 2002 Dilsukhnagar Sai Baba Temple bomb blast case. The Toyota Corolla car Salahuddin was travelling in rammed into a truck at Chityal while he was heading towards Hyderabad.
44-year-old Salahuddin sustained a grievous injury on his head, and was declared dead when taken to a private hospital in Hyderabad. The car driver escaped with minor injuries.
Nalgonda police said that the incident occurred at around 1.30 am on National Highway 65 in Pedda Kaparthy village. “The driver, who was identified as Shoaib, was driving too fast and was trying to overtake a truck.
Due to overspeeding, he lost control and rammed into the truck. Salahuddin, who was sitting on the front passenger seat, sustained a serious head injury hitting his head against the dashboard,” said Sub Inspector of Police, Chityal, Venkateswar. Police suspects that Salahuddin was not wearing a seat belt, and was playing games on his mobile phone.
As the driver had no major injuries, he informed 108 ambulance service, and rushed the victim to a corporate hospital in Hyderabad, where doctors declared him dead.
Salahuddin, who originally hails from Nalgonda, was returning to his house at Babanagar, Hyderabad, after attending the marriage of his friend and ex SIMI activist Asgar Ali.
Nalgonda police has booked a case under IPC section 304 A (for causing death due to negligence) and started a probe into the accident.
Salahuddin had past run-ins with the law:
An engineering graduate from the reputed Muffakham Jah College of Engineering in Hyderabad, Salahuddin became a SIMI activist at a young age. He became national president of the outfit in 1998 and held the post till 2000, when he retired at the age of 30.
Salahuddin was accused of conspiring with eight other persons in executing the Dilsukhnagar blast on November 21, 2002, which killed two persons and injured nearly 20 persons.
Salahuddin, who escaped to Dubai, was arrested by state CID three years ago after he was reportedly deported by the Dubai government to India. He was also booked for his hate speech at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, and was arrested.
He got on bail two years ago, and ran a furniture showroom in Dilsukhnagar. He then absconded to Dubai where he worked as civil engineer for more than 10 years. CID officials had said that while he was in Dubai, he was involved in a fraud case, and was deported. He was arrested and shifted to MP from where he was brought to Hyderabad on Prisoners Transit Warrant.
