Telangana to release Rs 500 crore fee reimbursement arrears
The arrears in Telangana amount to about Rs 1,300 crore
Hyderabad: The Telangana government will release Rs 500 crore to engineering colleges towards the long pending fee reimbursement arrears. Education Minister G. Jagadish Reddy said AP should share the costs based on population ratio.
AP Chief Minister Naidu had earlier offered to share the past and future costs of fee reimbursement in the population ratio of 58:42 in place of the FAST scheme. The proposal was then ignored by Telangana. The two states owe about Rs 2,500 crore to professional colleges. The arrears in Telangana amount to about Rs 1,300 crore.
The government had earlier told engineering colleges to admit students eligible for FAST scheme without collecting fees from them and that the money would be released later. Mr Jagadish Reddy said the amount should be shared based on population ratio. "We will release arrears due to colleges in Telangana but the amount should be shared later by the two states based on population ratio. We will ask the AP government to pay its share," he said.
He said the government would pay the arrears in two more instalments over the next two to three months. There would be no discrimination between Telangana and AP students as these payments are meant for students of previous years.
Telangana Engineering and Professional Colleges Management Association chairman Dr Gautam Rao hailed the decision.
