Vijayawada: The saline levels in the city’s groundwater are increasing rapidly, so much so that experts are worried of serious health implications due to its consumption. Saline levels are especially high in areas like Kundavarikandrika, Payakapuram, Christurajapuram, Sanathnagar and Autonagar.
A study by the groundwater department found the changes after testing samples collected from 31 points across the city. According to the groundwater department, sodium chloride content was more than 700 mg per litre of water, within the city limits, thus making it unsuitable for drinking. Unfortunately, a majority of the people, especially the poor section, continue to consume this water.
“Dumping of silt, garbage, chemical residue are the main reason behind the increase in sodium chloride content,” said hydrologist U. Rajasekhar. Every citizens has a responsibility to ensure such pollutants are disposed off carefully as this alone will solve the problem, he said.
Areas like Vidyadharapuram, Kothapet, Chittinagar, Nainavaram, Kedereswaripet, Madhuranagar, Machavaram, Executive Club, Vijaynagar Colony, Autonagar, New Sanathnagar, Benz Circle, Governorpet and Suryaraopet in city were found to have sodium chloride content of more than 600 mg per litre.
