Ram Mandir issue: RSS puts ball in PM Modi’s court

RSS said the issue would be taken up in due course
Lucknow: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has said that the Modi government has time till 2019 to clear the obstacles that lie in the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Talking to reporters on the first day of the Akhil Bharatiya Karyakari Mandal meeting of the RSS in Lucknow, the Sangh’s joint general secretary, Dattatreya Hosabale, said that the government had its own priority and this issue would be taken up in due course.
“The Ram temple is one the national agenda and it is up to the saints, seers, VHP and the government to work out the modalities on this issue. We are supporting them for the construction of the Ram temple,” he said.
When asked that the BJP had promised to clear the hurdles in construction of temple through legislation if it was voted to power, the Sangh leader said, “It is already there in the election manifesto of the BJP.”
Mr Hosabale said that the three-day meet of the RSS in Lucknow would discuss issues related to national security and relevant social issues too. On the issue of love jihad, he said that the issue had been discussed regularly since the past ten years but if any resolution was moved, it would be debated upon again. Mr Hosabale lauded the role played by the Modi government in the natural calamity that struck Jammu and Kashmir recently.
“RSS workers have been actively helping in relief and rescue operations in Jammu and Kashmir and now Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. The relief work in these states by our activists would also be discussed in the three-day conclave. The RSS workers rescued about 3,885 persons during Kashmir floods,” he said.
Sangh sources, meanwhile, disclosed that the RSS leadership would also discuss the upcoming elections in Jammu and Kashmir and, if needed, chalk out a strategy to ensure that the BJP comes to power in the state.
Mr Hosabale said that the RSS would soon launch programmes to inculcate better civic sense. The programme obviously supports Mr Modi’s Swachchh India initiative launched earlier this month.
Replying to questions on the performance of the Modi government, Mr Hosabale said that the government had just been formed and the Sangh would assess its performance after a few months.
“The meeting will discuss the economic and political issues confronting the country and give its opinion on them,” he said.
He further said that the RSS was expanding at the rate of about 20 per cent per year and this year alone, over 1.25 lakh Swayam Sewaks had participated in its primary training programme. He said that 4,500 new shakhas had been formed in the past one year.
He informed that during the three day conclave, 390 pracharaks and other national-level office-bearers would share their experiences and give their suggestions about work done in various fields.
Mr Hosabale said that the meeting began with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat paying tributes to soldiers killed in exchange of fire on border areas. Asked about the presence of BJP president Amit Shah at the conclave, the RSS leader said that he had come as a swayamsevak.
