Thiruvananthapuram: The discontent in the Congress over the government decision to introduce fresh taxes came to the fore at the KPCC executive committee meeting on Friday. Many who spoke at the meeting criticised the government for hiking the taxes in various sectors to garner additional revenue.
KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran told reporters after the meeting that the government should have discussed the matter with all concerned before increasing the tax burden.
“This has been conveyed to the government. We have given in writing suggestions for overcoming the financial crisis,” Mr Sudheeran said.
KPCC vice-president V.D. Satheesan who spoke at the meeting said that the decision to levy additional taxes through ordinance was not fair. The government should have held party-level discussions before hiking the taxes, he said.
There were earlier protests from the UDF partners also against the cabinet recommendation on a hiking the taxes. The Muslim League had wanted the government to find other revenue sources to tide over the financial crisis instead of taxing the people.
The meeting charted out Mr Sudheeran’s Janapaksha Yatra aimed at political mobilisation. The Yatra will start from Manjeswaram on November 4 and end in Thiruvananthapuram on December 9.
