Jayalalithaa given two months to appeal
Jayalalithaa will be released on bail on executing a bond with two solvent sureties
New Delhi: The Supreme Court bench had remarked that former TN chief minister J. Jayalalithaa had delayed trial proceedings for years and, if she was allowed to come out on bail, then the appeal would go on for two decades.
“I undertake that no delay would be caused while appeal is heard by HC. It is not a game. It may have been a game before. You can record my statement,” Mr Fali S. Nariman told SC.
Taking into account the assurance given by Mr Nariman, the bench gave Ms Jayalalithaa’s counsel two months and posted the hearing for December 18, while noting that they would not give even a day’s extension for the paperwork to be filed.
The bench also said it would give directions to the Karnataka HC to dispose of the appeal by Jayalalithaa within three months.
The HC had refused to give her bail or to suspend the sentence. “Selvi J. Jayalalithaa, Tmt. N. Sasikala, Mr. V.N. Sudhakaran, and Tmt. J. Elasvarasi be released on bail on executing a bond with two solvent sureties by each of them to the satisfaction of the 36th Addl. City Civil & Sessions Judge at Bangalore,” the bench said.
