Cyclone Hudhud: Officials make ‘good use’ of relief money

Rs 25 lakh sanctioned for meals for the staff working in the cyclone centre
Hyderabad: Official expenses made a huge dent in the government coffers during the Hudhud relief operations. Armed with AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s go-ahead for spending “money without bar”, state officials from IAS to lower cadre, who are taking part in relief operations are spending huge amounts.
At a time when lakhs of poor people in Hudhud-affected areas are having a tough time even getting drinking water, Rs 25 lakh has been sanctioned for meals for the staff working in the cyclone centre at the Secretariat.
The Police department too has sent a proposal to allot Rs 2 crore immediately to pay other districts’ police staff participating in relief operations. AP government has released another Rs 25 lakh towards supply of essential commodities to the lakh of Hudhud victims.
Meanwhile, Mr Naidu has decided to pay 50 per cent additional DA to officers and staff who are working in relief operations in Hudhud affected areas.
Sources said that Mr Naidu told chief secretary I.Y.R. Krishna Rao about his decision to pay an additional 50 per cent DA to the IAS and other officers and staff working in the cyclone affected areas and asked him to issue orders.
According to a rough estimate, the government’s decision to depute extra IAS officials and other staff to work in cyclone affected areas will likely to cost around Rs 50 crore, including the additional 50 per cent DA.

A senior officer commented that the governments would end up spending more on officers than on supply of essential commodities etc. for Hudhud victims.
