Dalit killings: Karnataka High Court Acquits

The convicts had approached the HC challenging the order of the lower court

BENGALURU: The Karnataka High Court on Friday acquitted seven persons in the Badanavalu triple murder case for lack of evidence. However, it has confirmed life sentence against 13 others convicted in the case.

A lower court in Mysore had convicted 20 persons in a caste slash, which resulted in the murder of three Dalits in 1993. The convicts had approached the HC challenging the order of the lower court.

The HC acquitted seven for lack of evidence, but confirmed life sentence for 13 others and directed them to pay Rs 50,000 each to the victims’ family.

Sensing the gravity of the offence, the state government had ordered a CBI probe. After the investigation it had filed the chargesheet in the case registered by the Nanjangud Rural Police Station.

The CBI had stated that 23 person attacked the victims following dispute over entry of Dalits into the Siddappaji Temple of the village. Three of the accused died during the course of the trial.
