North-East student attack: Accused were drunk, picked up quarrel
Bengaluru: In a strong message to those who carry out attacks on the people from other states, the city police have opened rowdy sheets against the three accused held for attacking a northeast student in Kothanur police station limits the city on Tuesday night.
The three accused, Arun Kumar, Karunakar and James, have now been declared history sheeters. “To keep a close vigil on the three accused, we have opened rowdy sheets against them. Among the three assailants, Arun Kumar is a habitual offender and had a history of crime. He was involved in a bike theft case registered in Kothanur police station,” DCP (North-East) Vikas Kumar said.
Meanwhile, one of the assault victims T. Michael Lamjethang Haoki, 26, met city Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi on Thursday and gave him details of the incident. “He has explained that the attackers were drunk and did not racially abuse him directly, but picked up a quarrel without any reason. He felt they just wanted some reason to fight and picked up a quarrel over the students not knowing Kannada. Also, he said that he was residing in the city for the last two-and-a-half years and had not faced any such problem,” Reddi said.
The top-cop has directed all the DCPs to convene a peace meeting at places where students from other states, especially from north-east, are staying in large numbers. “There is a huge population of students from north-east and from foreign countries in the city. They opt for this state due to the friendly nature and hospitality. We assure them of complete safety and they need not panic,” Reddi added.
Will seek report from CM: Rajnath
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has expressed concern over the incident and said that he would talk to the Karnataka Chief Minister in this regard. At an event in Haryana, he said that action should be taken against the culprits and no one can discriminate against anyone on the basis of caste, creed and sect.
