ISL: Kolkata surge to top of table
Atletico de Kolkata registered their second straight victory in the ISL
New Delhi: Atletico de Kolkata moved to the top of the Indian Super League table with their second win in as many games, beating hosts Northeast United FC 2-0 at the Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium in Guwahati on Thursday night with a goal in each half from Fikru Teferra Lemassa and Jakub Podany. Ethiopian striker Fikru scorer of Kolkata’s first goal in the 3-0 demolition of Mumbai FC in the ISL opener and former Czech international Podany quelled a spirited challenge from the home side before a packed stadium, giving the Atletico Madrid-backed side six points from their two matches. The defeat dropped Northeast United to third in the table on three points.
Despite having Spanish midfielder Borja Fernandes sent off for a second yellow card, Kolkata carried too many guns on the night for Northeast FC. Kolkata’s ‘marquee’ player Luis Garcia marshalled his men superbly with Fikru striking in the 15th minute and Podany sealing the win in the final minute of scheduled play despite Kolkata having just 10 men on the pitch. It was NorthEast United’s first loss after their 1-0 win over Kerala Blasters.
