Chennai: Veteran communist leaders N. Sankaraiah and R. Nallakannu on Wednesday said that a mass movement against corruption will be launched in the state soon and condemned police for the “last minute” denial of permission for holding a conference against corruption on Thana Street in Purasawalkam.
The police denied permission on Wednesday evening for holding the conference citing law and order issue even though a petition seeking permission was filed four days ago.
“When the ruling AIADMK party men were allowed to hold demonstrations against conviction of former CM Jayalalithaa, we are being denied our democratic right to organise a conference. It is an attempt to silence the opposition parties,” veteran leader Sankaraiah told reporters.
Mr Sankaraiah said that the idea of holding the conference against corruption was to highlight the fact that Lok Ayukta was not constituted in the state to enquire into the charges of corruption. He urged all the like minded organisation to come together to taken forward the movement against corruption.
CPI national council member R. Nallakannu said that their aim was to form a corruption free government. Welcoming the formation of anti-corruption movement, Tamil Nationalist Movement president Pazha Nedumaran said that people should come forward to fight against corruption. “Those who are trying to prevent such movement are fascists,” he said, pointing out that leaders like Sankaraiah and Nallakannu went to prison fighting for the people's cause.
State CPI(M) secretary G. Ramakrishnan said permission was denied at the last minute to prevent the Left from going to the court.
