Students show door for waste

KSSP put in place a waste disposal management system, setting up a bio gas plant unit on its premises
ALAPPUZHA: The eco club of the Government Girls' Higher Secondary School, Haripad, and the Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) has put in place a waste disposal management system, setting up a bio gas plant unit on its premises. A seminar on the subject was held in the school on Tuesday.
Ms DB Shaini, the coordinator of the project, said that the students took up the initiative as a complete solution to the school's waste disposal concerns. "Our school, with a strength of over 500 students, produces a huge quantity of waste each day, which was becoming burdensome, and we were for long searching for a solution to waste treatment in the school itself. For the first time in the district, a government school has come out with a waste management model. The eco club raised the funds too for the project."
Vinod, a Parishad member who took part in the project, said that two biogas plants, set up in the school compound, could treat up to 18 kg of waste materials per day. The Parishad also conducted a training programme for students to create awareness on the advantages of source-based waste treatment. "We do believe that students are vehicles of change. Hence, we took special classes about the functioning of the plant. The school has decided to add more plants as necessary,” he says
S Haripriya, a Class 8 student, said that she had turned environment conscious after becoming a member of the club. “We were trained to use the plant. We conserve nature and the eco system for future generations. I hope all schools take up such initiatives to keep their premises clean."
