If an X actor thinks his trailer will destroy a film, that’s stupid: Shah Rukh
Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan has ruled Diwali for many years now with several of his films having released during the festival. Continuing the tradition this year is Red Chillies Entertainment’s Happy New Year. Loud whispers in the industry are saying that SRK’s arch rival Aamir Khan is trying to steal his thunder by deciding to release the trailer of PK on the same day. What set tongues wagging is the fact that Aamir has not even contacted Shah Rukh’s office to talk about attaching the trailer and has spoken directly to the exhibitors.
Reportedly, he was given the option to release the trailer with Haider, produced by the studio which is also producing PK. But Aamir turned it down saying Haider is a small film.
However, Aamir has now clarified that he and Raj Kumar Hirani had already booked the festive season to launch their trailer. In fact, trailers of Aamir’s earlier films have come out on Diwali. Reports also suggest that Aamir is planning an event on the same day.
When asked about his take on the matter, Shah Rukh threw some light on the process of attaching trailers with other films. He said, “Everyone else works the same way I work. I think you are just so selflessly selfish about your own work, you have no time to look at what the other is doing.
“When Singham was coming, the marketing team felt that it was an important film and we should release the trailer with that film. So we bought the time, that’s how you do it. I got a call from Ajay and Rohit saying why are you buying it, just put it with us, it’s free. I think it was an amazing gesture.”
Elaborating on the importance of attaching a trailer with a big film, SRK said, “If I want to release a trailer, I’d try and release it with a big film to get more eye balls. I do that, so it’s illogical to assume somebody else wouldn’t. But if I was to think that an X actor is thinking his trailer is going to destroy the film it comes with, that’s stupid. If you want to attach your trailer, you can buy the time. That’s business sense.”
On Diwali, trailers of two other big films are coming out. Shah Rukh says, “Adi has attached Byomkesh. Normally we don’t put trailers in our film, nor do we ask anyone to do so, because the film length increases. Adi is an old friend, he is also distributing HNY. So we don’t have any issues. Action Jackson is also releasing with us and Ajay has been very nice.”
