Drama on the field
Celebrities endorsing sports leagues seems to have received a lot of flak
After the celebrity extravaganza that IPL witnessed from both the business and the Bollywood bandwagon, all the other leagues have followed suit. Not just that, there seems to be a competition between the stars who are part of the leagues, more than the teams themselves. And avid sport buffs are worried that these leagues have become another entertainment platform, more than promoting the sport itself.
As we rejoice that India is moving away from cricket to other sports like kabbadi, tennis and football, there is also a cause for concern. Fuelled by the money that the movie business has churned out, sports has become the other thing that actors are investing in. From Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Nita Ambani, the recent ISL kick-off felt like more of a movie set than a football match. Not to mention, Priyanka Chopra actually went on record to say, there is a ‘love story’ between glamour and sport that is trending in the country.
As some of the tweets read, rupayan bhattacharya @rupayanb: Most ridiculous side of #ISL ceremony. @priyankachopra introduced team by introducing celebrity. She had no idea about Del Piero, Trezeguet. Sadly, that is the state of affairs in a nation which has a million screaming football fans who tune in to watch EPL as much as cricket. Fans question that in international leagues, team owners are never in front of the camera and it is always the players who take the centre stage.
Hence, the endless list of stars became a cause for concern, like Kajal Aggarwal, Ileana D’Cruz, Lisa Hayden which did not go down well with certain sections of the public. We think, as much as we want the spotlight on sports, we also feel that celebrities need to focus on the job that they are best at.
