Operations continue to rescue 4 year old girl

The pit is being dug horizontally from 45 feet

Hyderabad: The operation to rescue 4-year-old G. Girija in the Manchal mandal of Ranga Reddy district continued late into the night on Monday. Anxious villagers thronged the spot where she fell into the abandoned bore well on Sunday.

The operation continued with about four JCBs throughout Sunday night and Monday too. A force of about 200 persons from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the fire department is trying their best.

The rescue team dug a pit of about 45 feet parallel to the bore well thinking that the victim was trapped at around 45 feet. Then they started digging horizontally to find her. Throughout the operation oxygen was supplied.

Adding to problems a huge boulder blocked the passage dug for the rescue. “When we were close to the place where she is suspected trapped, we ran into a boulder. Unless we remove it we can’t proceed,” said inspector P. Jagadeeshwar.

However, mine department personnel removed it by late evening. The pit is being dug horizontally from 45 feet. Sources said another boulder was found late in the night.

Ranga Reddy district officials said the rescue operation is progressing fast. “The rescue teams are working briskly. We hope for the best,” said joint collector M.V. Reddy.

The girl fell into a 300 feet deep bore well on Sunday morning when she went to relieve herself when her grandparents were busy working in the fields. Girija was playing with her 6-year-old brother G. Charan told her grandmother Ailamma that she wanted to relieve herself. Ailamma told her to go to the cotton field near their land and she fell into the bore well.

Manchal police said the land belonged to the victim's relative named M. Bashaiah who abandoned the bore well six months ago after he couldn't find water. Police is likely to book a case against him for negligence.

Girija, has been living with her grandparents for the last two years after her mother, G. Sunitha, had committed suicide. Her grandmother Ailamma who is still in shock said, "We want to see her safe.

This is my only prayer since Sunday." Girija was an LKG student at the Vivekananda School in Manchal.
