Pakistan asks UN to intervene on Kashmir issue
Islamabad: Pakistan on Sunday reached out to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon against “Indian aggression” along the Line of Control and sought resolution of the Kashmir issue.
Mr Sartaj Aziz, adviser to the Pakistan Prime Minister on national security and foreign affairs, wrote to the UN Secretary General about India’s continuing “aggression on the LoC”.
In his letter, Mr Aziz informed the UN chief about the “latest ceasefire violations” by India and urged him to “resolve the Kashmir issue” in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.
The adviser reminded the international community of its “responsibility towards this issue”.
The move came on top of the security situation along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir after ceasefire violations and cross-border firing over the past weeks.
In his letter, Mr Aziz pointed out that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute was one of the “longest and outstanding issues” on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council.
He said the UNSC in its resolutions had promised holding of a plebiscite in Kashmir, under the auspices of the United Nations, granting right to self-determination to the people of Kashmir and these resolutions are still valid though unimplemented to date.
He said that for decades, Pakistan has been reminding the UN and the international community to fulfil that promise.
“This is the responsibility of the international community. We cannot draw a veil on the issue of Kashmir, until it is addressed in accordance with the wishes of the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
