Sunday shoppers storm T Nagar

Sales have decreased by 10% from the previous year

Chennai: With Diwali sales picking up momentum at retail outlets in T.Nagar, the area witnessed heavy traffic on Sunday as last minute shoppers poured in. All the roads that led into T.Nagar were tightly packed on Sunday with shoppers having a hard time moving around.

“We came early this morning but only managed to get out of the store by evening. Movement was difficult and time consuming,” said S. Lalitha from Saligramam, who was returning after her day long shopping time inside a single store at T.Nagar. According to city traffic police, atleast five lakh shoppers visited T. Nagar on Sunday alone.

They expect that the crowds will continue until Diwali with around two lakh visitors expected every day. “We have created additional parking spaces for the convenience of shoppers but are still unable to manage the crowds,” said a senior city police official.

However, sales have not been as brisk this year when compared to the past. “Sales have decreased by 10% from the previous year,,” said Arockyaraj, corporate communications head of Pothys.
