Three major khap leaders are in the fray in the elections
Chandigarh: Some 92 Khaps, a highly influential self-styled caste councils, in Haryana hold the key in the Assembly polls even though Prime Minis-ter Narendra Modi reached out to them ahead of hustings.
Khaps have drawn flak in recent years for controversial diktats on same-gotra (sub-caste) marriages and other issues. They have also played a crucial role in resolving the movement launched for reservation of Jats.
Major Khaps like Nogama, Khera, Kan-dela, Meham Chouba-sia, Ghatwal and Satrol wield influence in the districts of Jhajjar, Rohtak, Baha-durgarh, Sonipat, Jind, Hisar, Kaithal, Gurgaon, Bhiwani and Mahendragarh.
