10 villages inundated
Residents panic as sea surge reported in coastal villages
Visakhapatnam: Residents in the coastal villages under Bheemili, S Rayavaram, Rambilli, Nakkapalli and a few other coastal mandals in Vizag district were under the grip of panic after seawater had entered their villages, owing to very rough weather due to the severe cyclone Hudhud on Sunday. Over 10 villages in those mandals were inundated by sea surge of around 200 mts under the influence of Hudhud. Around 540 out of 610 mechanised boats in Vizag fishing harbour have returned to the anchorage and over 60 boats, which went to parts of Odisha a few days back were asked to anchorage at Paradeep port.
Over 60 boats, which were anchored at Vizag fishing harbour were damaged due to the collision with another boat with rough sea conditions and high waves. Though the leaders of mechanised boat owners were unable to spell out the exact quantum of damage, they roughly
estimated it was more than Rs 6 crore.
The district administration said sea surge was reported in parts of Mangamaripeta, Bheemili, S Rayavaram, Rambilli, Nakkapalli and a few other areas as the sea water entered into the villages. Normal life was thrown out of gear on Sunday as the winds with a sped of 180 kmph battered all the coastal areas in the district.
“We never expected that the cyclone Hudhud could damage in such a manner. I have been residing close to coast, but never seen such high tides with full force in my life ever before the cyclone Hudhud,” said Ch. Anil of Sivaganesh Nagar area in Vizag city.
“I felt that it was a routine affair during the cyclone time and the sea would be rough. But, for the firs time in my life, I experienced what was a severe cyclone with Hudhud that destroyed our home,” says 60-year-old V. Malesh. “Luckily, the rescue teams reached our area in time and they evacuated us to safer places,” he added.
