When dressing up pays
2 Hyderabadi cosplayers won the golden ticket to Chicago to be part of an International comic event
Hyderabad: At the second edition of Comic Con Hyderabad, three lucky cosplayers won the golden ticket to Chicago to be part of its international event in April. Of them, we caught up with the two Hyderabadis who took more than three weeks to put together their costumes for the gala event.
‘I resemble Megamind’
From the moment he walked into the venue at the HICC, Vinod Kumar kept getting stopped for pictures as he was dressed up as Megamind.
The layout designer at the city-based Green Gold animations tells us why he chose ‘Megamind’: “He is a villain who’s actually a nice person. I actually think I do resemble him, because I’m also skinny like Megamind,” laughs Vinod and says, “I don’t think anyone had ever dressed up as Megamind in India before. From the apparel to the gun, I made everything at home and it took me almost three weeks to put together the costume. On the day of the event, my mom Lakshmi and sister Ashima put on my makeup that took more than two hours.”
Megamind is loved for his famous dance moves and Vinod too wasn’t far behind. An impromptu jig on stage by Vinod led to many dance performances on the floor with fans who wanted a picture with him. And when the results were announced, the shouts of his friends were louder than the host’s. “I’m so excited to visit Chicago in April,” he says.
‘I Felt like a celebrity’
When Saka Prathik John decided to be Mystogan from the Fairytail anime, little did he know that he would turn into a celebrity at the event.
The chartered accountancy student put together his costume from PVC pipes, paper mache and chart paper, and while it felt a little weird on the road with all his accessories, once he entered the convention centre, it was a different scenario. “As soon as I entered the premises, the awkwardness was gone. It felt great to be with like-minded people who treated you as a celebrity,” he says.
And while he agrees it was a tough competition, looking at his fan following at the event, Prathik knew he had high chances of winning. “Once I got the golden ticket, all the efforts were worth it,” he says.
