Walking the ramp for a cause
Mumbai: On the final day of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW), designer Neeta Bhargava showcased her collection Unmaze the Haze. The showstoppers for this line were famous Kuchipudi artistes Bhavana and Yamini Reddy, who wore organic white ensembles accentuated with indigo dye hand paintings.
The designer says that the central theme of the show was to highlight the chemical pollution that was caused by artificial textile industries.
About her choice of the showstoppers, Neeta says, “As an artist I wanted to choose someone who understands the importance of preserving arts; as a designer I am trying to revive the handlooms and these girls are contributing in the field of classical dance hence they were the perfect choice.
It was my tribute to an artist as an artist. The clothes that I gave them were made of pure organic fabrics with hand-painted designs.”
The talented sisters have been associated with fashion and have previously walked for Charu Parasher and Satya Paul as well. They add that it was a good experience to walk for Neeta.
Bhavana, who wore a chic white tunic on the ramp, says, “Since we are used to dance acts, stage presence for a fashion show was not at all difficult for us you can say it was like a cake walk because we did not walk as models but as dancers.
We did not get any time for rehearsals so it was an impromptu decision to do the namaskar style bow at the end of the show. The clothes that we were wearing on the ramp were very comfortable and airy; pure organic cotton with hand-painted details for Indian summer is a very good idea.”
Yamini, who wore a lovely angrakha style white kurta and matching palazzo pants on the ramp also looked delighted after the show. She says, “When Neeta told us about the show, we were quite excited to be a part of it.
The idea of using organic, hand-woven fabric and natural colours to preserve the dying textile art was totally in accordance to our sensibilities. While walking for the show we felt so light because the clothes were very comfortable and the make-up was also light.”
