Hyderabad: Advocates at Hyderabad High Court are expecting the bifurcation of the HC to gain momentum in the backdrop of the meeting between Telangana state Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and Chief Justice of India H. L. Dattu.
Mr Rao on Friday met the CJI at Delhi and urged him to take up steps for bifurcation of the existing common High Court for the successor states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Sources close to the Chief Minister’s office revealed that Mr Rao explained to the CJI about the sentiments of Telangana advocates and their demand of having separate High Court.
Sources said that the Chief Minister explained to the CJI that ever since the formation of Andhra Pradesh in 1956, the advocates of Telangana have been facing discrimination with regard to appointments to various judicial offices.
Number of judges from Telangana region in the High Court of AP has always been very low. Only 47 are from Telangana as against a total of 186 judges appointed so far to the High Court.
As of now, out of the working strength of 31 judges, only six are from Telangana region. Telangana advocates feel that establishment of a separate court will solve their long pending grievance.
Meanwhile, the Telangana Advocates Joint Action Committee has been planning to mount pressure on the state government as well as the centre for bifurcation of the High Court.
Mr Sarsani Satyam Reddy, leader of TAJAC, said, "Even advocates from Andhra are seeking bifurcation, but certain vested interests are behind the delay in the process despite of letter to the Supreme Court by the Union Law Ministry.
The absence of specific timeline in the AP Reorganization Bill for establishment of a separate High Court for AP and the continuance of existing court as common high court for both the states, the
vested interests are taking advantage in delaying the process."
He added, "We are chalking out a programme to expose the persons behind the delay in separation of High Court and also for an indefinite hunger strike to achieve our goal as early as possible. "
