Wedded blitz, By George!
Amal Alamuddin and George Clooney spared no expense to make their wedding truly memorable. From the designer outfits they sported to the rings and arrangements for all the guests — we look at some of the most expensive elements from the wedding in Venice.
£5,000 for the groom’s tux
It was Giorgio Armani all the way for the groom during his wedding festivities, and while his £5,000 wedding tuxedo sure made for a dapper choice, Amal so successfully monopolised the world’s attention that George may have as well worn a sack!
£1,000-£3,000 for Aman Grand Canal suites
The luxury resort that Amal and George hosted their wedding at, fronts the iconic Grand Canal in Venice, considered the main “thoroughfare” of the city. The suites at the resort cost anywhere between £1,000 and £3,000 and their water taxis — such as the ones that ferried the wedding party to and from the events — can be hired for about £200 each. George and Amal had also booked suites at the luxury Belmond Hotel Cipriani for their guests, who included U2 frontman Bono, actors Matt Damon and Emily Blunt and their partners, fashion editor Anna Wintour, supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber (who was George’s best man), and their extended families. Considered among the most expensive hotels in the world, Cipriani suites can be booked for $1,500 a night.
$750,000 for Amal’s engagement ring
George is believed to have helped design the seven-carat, ethically-mined emerald-cut diamond ring that graced Amal’s hand. It is estimated to have set George back by about $750,000. That isn’t even counting the slim diamond-encrusted platinum band that he chose as Amal’s wedding ring.
£5 million for a new mansion
Recent reports claim that George has bought a £5 million Oxfordshire home for his bride and that they are spending the days after their wedding on the peaceful country estate. The mansion is said to be within an hour’s distance from Highclere Castle (where the popular TV series Downton Abbey is filmed) and boasts a spa complex, a cinema, cottages for George and Amal’s aides and of course acres of rolling English landscape.
£10,000 for the wedding gown and post-wedding dress
The price of the gorgeous Oscar de la Renta gown Amal chose to wear for her wedding ceremony was kept under wraps. But fashion pundits estimate that the bespoke French lace creation would have set the bride back by at least £10,000. That seems like a conservative estimate given that even regular bridal gowns by the designer retail for upwards of £6,000.
Amal had chosen a considerably less expensive outfit for the civil ceremony — the cream wide-legged Stella McCartney trousers she chose carry a $500 price tag, but then upped the ante once again with a short Giambattista Valli number from the designer’s haute couture Autumn/Winter 2014 line. The custom dress with macramé work is once again believed to have cost upwards of £10,000 — and is every bit worth it!
