Telangana state may cancel Nagarjunasagar tail-end project

The government has paid Rs 714 crore to the contractor as mobilisation advances

Khammam: The government is considering the options to get the mobilisation advances paid to the contractor before cancelling the Dummugudem-Nagarjunasagar tail-end project. The committee constituted on the project viability recommended cancellation of it by saying that there is no use with it to the Telangana state.

The government has paid Rs 714 crore to the contractor as mobilisation advances and the survey expenses. The project cost of Rs 17,201 crore was divided into 10 packages to lift Godavari water in to the tail-end project built at Nagarjunasagar. The engineering experts, including R. Vidyasagara Rao, have been opposing the project by saying it will not benefit Telangana.

The contractor bought some pipes needed for the project and placed them at Paloncha and Kothagudem. These pipes may remain as relics of the closed project if the government takes a decision of cancelling it. The Dummugudem-Nagarjunasagar tail-end project, which is considered as first river-link project in India, is meant for lifting 165 TMC feet of water from Godavari to Nagarjunasagar tail-end project during monsoon. The contracts were called on engineering-procurement-construction (EPC) system.
