Coimbatore: With Deepavali less than a fortnight away, Coimbatore city police have stepped up vigil in the busy shopping hubs at Town Hall, Oppanakara Street and Cross Cut road.
Coimbatore city police commissioner K. Viswanathan said that security arrangements have been made in all the shopping areas in the city in view of the upcoming Deepavali festival.
The police have set up watch towers to monitor the crowd in the shopping areas. Wooden barricades have been put up for half a kilometer from Town Hall to Raja Street to prevent traffic congestion as well and avoid pedestrian movement on the main roads.
Three clock towers have been set up in three different locations at Town hall to keep tabs on the pickpockets who are on the prowl in crowded areas.
The cops are also making announcements on how to remain alert while shopping. Policemen in uniform and plain clothes have been given pictures of habitual offenders and ex-convicts to nab them. And the Big Bazaar police have also printed the pictures of the pickpocket thieves and the shoplifters in a flex board and kept in the public view.
Surveillance has been stepped up at shopping malls and shopping areas of Cross Cut Road, Oppanakkara Street, Raja Street, Big Bazaar Street, 100 Feet Road, DB Road, TV Samy Road, Tiruchi Road and Avinasi Road.
In case of any theft or pickpocket or emergency, the public can contact control room Number 100 and near Town Hall shopping area the public can contact 0422-2306482
