Women in burqa steal ornaments

They stole the ornaments after diverting the attention of the salesman

Hyderabad: In a major shoplifting incident that occurred last week, but which came to light only recently, two burqa clad women, posing as customers, stole about 200 grams of gold jewellery from P. Satyanarayana Sons Jewellers at Mehdipatnam in Huma-yunnagar. Following irregularities in acco-unts, the owner checked the surveillance camera and found out the theft much later.

On October 2, two burqa clad women, one aged around 25 and the other around 30, entered the busy shop in the evening. They are suspected to be sisters. They approached the salesman as customers and diverted his attention by asking him to show ornaments. As the salesman got busy displaying the jewellery, they stole some. “They entered like other customers into the shop and asked the salesman to display jewellery. As the shop was full the salesman’s attention got diverted. It was then that they stole the ornaments,” said SI D. Karunakar Reddy. “The theft was pre-planned as the women had small pockets in the burkha to conceal the jewellery,” added Mr Karunakar.

On Wednesday the shop owner found irregularities in the accounts, checked the surveillance camera in the shop and found out the theft. He approached the cops and lodged a complaint. A case was registered and the CCTV footage was examined by the crime team. However officials said the footage wasn't much helpful.

“As the women were wearing burqa it is a little difficult to identify them. Even the camera footage is not much helpful. We suspect the women could have visited the shop more than once and checked to see if the staff recognised them,” the investigating official said. Cops are examining video footage and a team has been formed to trace the culprits.
