Tamil Nadu police face custodial rape charge
Chennai: The CBI has registered a case of custodial rape against seven personnel of the Tamil Nadu police, the Madras High Court was informed on Wednesday during the hearing of the custodial torture and rape of a 49-year-old woman in Udumalpet police station in Tirupur district. Special public prosecutor submitted before a division bench that based on the examination of the victim, the CBI registered FIR against seven “identifiable” police personnel of the station under various criminal laws, including Section 376 (2) (a) (b) (custodial rape) of the IPC. After recording the CBI prosecutor’s submission, the bench posted the case to October 28. The court had earlier (on Sept. 27) turned down the state government plea to stay the CBI probe into the alleged custodial rape. The CBI had taken up the investigation of this case following the directive from Justice V. Ramasubramanian on September 24.
