Kalpakkam shooting: Village of armymen grieves

Chennai: The death of R. Ganesan has brought grief to the entire village of Thalavaipatti in Salem district, which has majority of its men working in the armed forces. The village has 300 families of which in 200 of them have men working with the CISF or the army.
Ganesan(58) was working at the rank of ASI with the CISF(central industrial security force) and was posted at Kalpakkam when he was shot down by his colleague.
Meanwhile, there is an uneasy calm around the CISF Barrack at Kalpakkam Madras Atomic Power Station (Maps) Complex, where head constable Vijay Pratap Singh shot dead three of his colleagues and injured two.
Shocked residents near the barracks are still unclear about what actually happened in the earlyhoursof Wednesday morning. “What we know is through the news,” say a group of women, discussing the incident a few metres from the barrack gates.
Around 620 CISF personnel, headed by a commandant, are stationed at the DAE Kalpakkam unit. They are responsible for the security of Maps. Thirty of them are accommodated at the bachelors’ barrack where the shoot-out happened while the others have been provided accommodation at quarters within the township.
A.Subburaj, (54), one of the victims, lived with his wife, Lalitha Rani, and son at the quarters on 10th Avenue nearby, the police said. “The family has gone to the Chengelpet Hospital to collect the bodies,” said a local.
“We didn’t hear any gun shots as most of us were sleeping. What attracted our attention was the sudden increase in vehicular traffic in the early hours, after which we came to know of the incident,” a resident said.
