Schools reopen amidst confusion
Chennai: On Tuesday, most schools in Chennai opened after their Dasera break. Despite the confusion that arose from yesterday’s call to close schools, in support of Jayalalithaa and subsequent directions from the Madras high court that the call was illegal, most schools managed to convey to parents that they would function normally.
Outside DAV Public School in Velachery the morning was like any other day with children walking into their classrooms.
Parents who spent Monday trying to check and cross check on whether schools were working said the matter was settled post the high Court ruling. Saraswathi, who came to drop her child at school said: “There was no confusion once we saw the news. I just paid my child’s fee, it was a normal day.”
Some schools, like Montford School on St Thomas Mount, had initially sent communication to parents asking students not to come to school, but then retracted in the evening, calling it a working day.
Arumainathan, the state president of Tamil Nadu Students and Parent Welfare Association said, “There was initially a confusion on whether school will be open or not. But by evening with the news on TV channels and the court verdict it was clear of any rumours.”
H E Wilkins, chairman, Doveton Corrie group of schools, said, “We were following the developments and there was no communication from the school department to close schools and soon the issue also fizzled out. So we just took a firm decision.”
However, there were a few schools that decided to go ahead with an extra holiday to avoid further confusion.
RMK Senior Secondary school, Velammal and Padma Sheshadari Bala Bhavan was among the schools that remained closed.
