Less drunken driving cases post-bar closure
The number got reduced to 1526 cases in the month of June
Kottayam: A significant reduction in drunken driving cases has been registered in the district, following the closure of 418 bars in the State. This is perceived as yet another positive feature of the liquor policy by the State Government.
According to the police data, in the month of March the cases registered were 1803, whereas in the month of April, after the bars were closed, the cases registered for drunken driving reduced to 1697.
The number got reduced to 1526 cases in the month of June, and the cases registered in the month of August showed a significant reduction in the number of drunken driving cases.
According to sources, the number of accident cases, at the casualty of the medical colleges, has also reduced consistently after the closure of 50 odd bars in the district, since April 2nd.
“Many accident cases were reported after consuming liquor and driving. The absence of availability of liquor may have reduced the accidents”, Dr S Satheesh, Professor of Psychiatry at the Govt. Medical College, Alappuzha told Deccan Chronicle.
Sources from the police said that after the closure of the bars the job of the police patrolling team has also lessened. The Government’s decision to close the bars on the month of April resulted in the scarcity of liquor through bars.
