From cheers to tears in 40 minutes

It turned out to be a traumatic Tuesday for the AIADMK functionaries
Coimbatore: From cheers to tears, moods metamorphosed in moments on Coimbatore streets on Tuesday. It turned out to be a traumatic Tuesday for the AIADMK functionaries and cadres who were anxiously awaiting the Bengaluru high court's ruling on the bail petition of their convicted and incarcerated leader Jayalalithaa.
As streaks of hope beamed from Bengaluru and television channels flashed the encouraging news that the court may grant bail for Amma, the crowds of AIADMK cadres erupted into delirious joy.
The AIADMK party office on Race Course which was forlorn for the last 10 days went into quick celebration mode. At 3.45 pm, cartons of sweets and fire crackers arrived and the party faithfully began distributing sweets and bursting crackers.
Corporation mayor P. Rajkumar spearheaded the joyful celebrations by feeding laddus to the public who passed by on two-wheelers. Even as the AIADMK workers shared their joy by distributing sweets, deputy mayor Leelavathi surprised everybody by doing a jig along with a
group of women cadres.
A group of AIADMK men in black shirts (worn to condemn the imprisonment of AIADMK general secretary Jayalalihaa) quickly removed the shirts and burnt them. Also, slogans praising Ms Jayalalithaa and denouncing DMK leader M. Karunanidhi and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy filled the air.
But it took just 40 minutes for glee to tranform into gloom and rapturous celebrations turn into outpourings of grief.
Just as mayor Rajkumar came out of the party office to distribute sweets to the public, heeding to the request of lensmen, partymen came rushing to inform him about the rejection of bail for Ms Jayalalithaa.
Immediately, grief gripped the mayor and he quietly left the place. Celebrations also came to an abrupt end as the party cadres realised that Ms Jayalalithaa has been denied bail. Amid their sobs and wails, the lit crackers burst.
"All our hopes to see Amma walk free have been shattered. I believe justice will prevail," said S. Deivani, an ardent AIADMK cadre at the party office.
