Dramatic abstracts
Malvankar speaks on how his paintings are a natural extension of his creativity
I appreciate all artists and their creativity as I feel each artists has his or her own story to tell through their art works. However, I am personally inspired by the story and the art of M. F Hussain. I greatly admire the artist. He had the confidence to speak his mind and follow his passion when the world was against him. I admire his conviction and dedication towards his art. This is reflected in his bold strokes and confident compositions. His abstracts are a world apart.
Each painting has a few clearly defined strokes that outline the forms and bring together the whole painting against a backdrop of colour combinations. I have had the opportunity to meet this great artist while I was graduating at Sir J. J School of Architecture, Mumbai. Despite his fame and fortune what struck me was his humbleness and his complete candid views on art which he shared with us without any form of pretense or censor.
I endeavor to put a little bit of myself in each of my art work and stay true to my concept. Apart from general admiration, the one learning that I took back from Hussain’s style and personality is —“Be True To Yourself,” this has remained with me. Keeping that in mind each collection that I have put together have stayed true to its concept — be it simple pure joy of colour combinations like the Thoughts On Canvas and Shades series, or the deeply introspective Abstraction collection. Contrary to popular belief, I encourage patrons to connect with a painting abstract or otherwise through their own personal reflections.
The idea is to enjoy the pure visual beauty of different shades of the colours, strokes, combinations and the overall composition. I want people to immerse in the visual treat that is put together with the different mix of colours, that reflect and celebrate different shades of life.
According to me abstract art is the simplest form of beauty that can be enjoyed by everyone. As an architect I often came across people who wanted to add just a little bit more to their walls but did not know how and what to choose. A painting doesn’t have to be complicated and difficult for you to be able to appreciate it. It should add to the beauty and aesthetic value of your house and should be pleasing to your senses.
My abstract paintings offer that one dramatic touch to a home giving it a bold flair. You need to just enjoy the elements and colours without having to overtly complicate it. To me Hussain’s paintings meant the same pure visual joy of expression and I choose to follow the same thought process in my paintings.
Amrish Vijay Malvankar has exhibited his collections at 11 solo and group shows and is putting together his next collection to be exhibited in 2015.
