No let up in spate of fasts, protests in state
AIADMK cadres continued their fast seeking early release of Jayalalithaa
Chennai: Thousands of AIADMK cadres on Monday continued their fast and demonstrations for the ninth day, seeking the early release of Jayalalithaa. A day ahead of the hearing in the Karnataka HC, demonstrations peaked in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Puducherry. In Chennai, Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy with party MPs and MLAs, organised a yaagam at the Vinayagar temple in Omandurar Estate.
Shops in Chennai were not asked to shut but there were reports of business firms in Coimbatore being asked to close down. About 500 AIADMK youth wing members also participated in the fast, observed at Kuniyamuthur in Coimbatore. Led by Coimbatore Mayor P. Rajkumar, about 70 councillors, including women, in black attire, took out a procession.
In Madurai, a special yaagam was performed at Meenakshi temple by a team of 70 priests. Moreover, the staff of HR&CE department sat in a protest near Chepauk guest house, expressing their solidarity with the AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa. The representatives of smaller parties submitted a petition to Governor Rosaiah seeking shifting of Jayalalithaa from Bengaluru to Tamil Nadu prison.
