Convicts’ music brings Dasara Aahar mela alive

Band of jail inmates has done over 20 programmes till date

Mysore: They are all murder convicts facing life imprisonment in the Central Jail of Mysore. Their life might have turned bitter due to circumstantial reasons. But they did not fail to add an emotional flavour to over 20 styles of food from traditional to continental served at the mega Dasara Aahar mela, which was a huge hit attracting not less than 20,000 people per day.

They in fact made the eyes of the audience wet with their melodious songs, especially the song “Thappu maadadoryaavre thappe maadadorellavre” from the Kannada film Matta.

Parivarthan Melodies, a band of Jail inmates and an initiative of Mysore Central Jail to provide exposure to transformed life convicts, performed at Dasara Aahar mela which concluded here on Monday.

The ADGP Prisons, K. V. Gagandeep and then Superintendent of Mysore Central Jail Mr Jaisimha, had initiated the programme. Talented inmates were trained by Musicians P. S. Murthy and Ganesh. As a result of rigorous training, Parivarthan has now emerged as a well polished band which has given over twenty programmes till date. The convicts are all 25 to 35 years of age and have completed five to ten years of imprisonment.
