Water sector needs modern tech, says CM Oomen Chandy
CM stressed the importance of developing sustainable technologies for water
KOCHI: The State’s water sector needed timely changes and modern technologies, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy while inaugurating the Indo- German water partnership summit here on Monday. He said the Government was committed to initiating long-term projects in sectors like water treatment, waste water treatment and research.
“Clean and safe water is increasingly becoming a limited resource. The State Government has initiated several schemes to address water crisis including rainwater harvesting and recharging of water resources like wells and ponds”, he said.
Addressing the gathering, he stressed the importance of developing sustainable technologies for water and waste water treatment suitable to the State’s specific conditions. “The possibility of desalination of the semi-saline backwaters of the State needs to be examined. If appropriate, cost effective and decentralized desalination plants can be developed and the issue of water scarcity along coastal areas can be resolved,” he said.
The Chief Minister also complimented the corporation for taking up the initiative in drafting a water policy, the first of its kind by a local body.
The summit is being jointly organised by the Centre for Sustainable Water Technology and Management (CSWTM) at SCMS School of Engineering and Technology and Kochi Corporation, in partnership with German Water Partnership (GWP).
