Students get acquainted with United Nations
675 participants from 27 schools will be a part of session
Chennai: Consul General of Japan in Chennai Masanori Nakano on Monday, who briefed students from city schools on the working model of the United Nations, said that he personally would not have got a concrete image of the UN’s activities if he had not got involved in the UN’s agencies at the ministry of foreign affairs. The general knowledge he had of it was not enough “as the UN is a huge organisation, involved in a wide range of activities”.
He was inaugurating the eighth annual session of the Sishya Model United Nations (SISHMUN), a three-day conference for school children across the state on ‘The role of the UN in Today’s World’.Nine mock committees of various UN departments, with 675 participants from 27 schools, will be a part of SISHMUN.
Guest speaker and senior advocate P.V.S. Giridhar, who spoke on the role of the United Nations in the Middle East, said that the UN was being hypocritical, propagating peace, while 80 per cent of its members sold arms. Mr Nakano’s response to that was that the UN was working on its policies and that arms manufacturing was done by individuals, not as a part of the organisation.
The students, who got a wider picture of the UN’s work, were excited to take part in the mock committee. “I learnt what it takes to get into the UN and a better perspective on how things work there,” said Roshan Ravishankar, a Class 12 student of Sishya School.
Another student, Vivek Jajoo, who has been following the UN’s activities regularly, said that Prime Minister Modi’s speech at the UN conference, in which he said that a country had to come up with its own solution with global partnership, was inspiring. He said that a knowledge of these activities gave students a grasp of global issues.
