Malayalis ‘trolling’ Facebook with fake IDs
Most of them have five or six fake IDs and are capable of making a topic viral in an hour or two
Kochi: The social media is notorious for ‘trolling’ an online activity which sees users posting offensive, derogatory and abusive comments on public platforms. But Keralites have given a whole new meaning to this phenomenon by targeting a celebrity or a particular person and then showering abuses on him or her.
Interestingly, most of the users who engage in online duels use fake IDs. Most of them have five or six fake IDs and are capable of making a topic viral in an hour or two. In the recent issue, the New York Times banned and blocked several Keralites, but in vain. The banned users rallied their troops and launched an attack as if they were engaged in an online war.
Most of the users are members of various Facebook communities. There are communities for each and every topic under the sun. Though most of the communities and Facebook pages are created for the benefit of users, some communities specialise in trolling. If we check the personal profiles of these users, most of them have profile pictures of celebrities while they hide all personal information.
According to Dr Philip John, senior consultant in psychiatry, it’s those who have Passive Aggressive Behavior who indulge in online trolling.
“Recluses and introverts take out their anger and frustrations in public platforms. They love to downgrade each and everything that come their way. Most of the users have no idea how to engage in constructive criticism”, he said.
Dr John added that people who used fake identities loved to keep a clean image in their personal profiles while they showed their violent nature in their fake IDs. Though Facebook announced it was planning to take action against fake ‘likes’, it is yet to come up with a concrete plan to weed out fake IDs.
