Jayalalithaa arrest protest: School association faces flak
Karunanidhi says it’s condemnable to exert pressure on the judiciary through protests
Chennai: The AIADMK agitations against the Bengaluru court sentencing party supremo Jayalalithaa has drawn flak from several political parties on Monday.
The public too seemed upset after the federation of private schools announced holiday on Tuesday, when her petitions for plea and suspension of sentence would be heard by the Karnataka high court, and later withdrew that fearing legal action. Early in the day, DMK president M. Karunanidhi shook himself out of the 2G knots to make a scathing attack on the AIADMK agitations, which he said affected normal life in the state.
“Protests are happening without police permission. I am shocked to know that private educational institutions will be closed for a person convicted in a graft case. It’s condemnable to exert pressure on the judiciary through such protests,” said the DMK chief. Scarier still, he wanted “those in authority”, could well mean Governor K. Rosaiah and the Centre to “ensure law and order is maintained in Tamil Nadu.”
Within a short time after Mr Karunanidhi’s scathing attack, the Federation of Associations of Private Schools withdrew its holiday notice. Its officials insisted they had to initially contemplate closure of institutions on the strike day considering the students’ safety.
PMK chief Dr S. Ramadoss joined the chorus of critics accusing the ruling party members of disrupting law and order. In a statement, the BJP ally questioned why schools, businesses and private transport operators have announced closure on Tuesday, the day the Karnataka HC will hear Jayalalithaa’s petitions for bail and suspension of the sentence.
The AIADMK men, he alleged, were forcing traders to down shutters to make it appear their protests were spontaneous. Ramadoss said the Bengaluru courts should take into account the these protests against the judiciary while deciding on Jayalalithaa’s petitions.
