Jamming on a terrace

City’s new music initiative Gig Veda has begun to capture the fancy of online music lovers
Hyderabad: Having struggled for years themselves, “to reach out to the right audience, a group of young musicians and music lovers have come together for an innovative initiative that will not only provide a platform for musicians like themselves, but also promote music online. And just a few months old, Gig Veda, as it is called, has already captured the fancy of music enthusiasts with ‘Terrace Jam Sessions’.
“It’s about providing a platform for people to do their own things. While most of them work at hotels and other venues, where covers of famous songs are appreciated, our Terrace Jam Sessions provide the space for them to explore their own compositions and creativity,” says Sri Krishna Mamidipudi, who along with Pranav Tallam conceptualised Gig Veda.
“As of now, we are meeting on my terrace and we have the whole thing set up with sound and the required equipment to shoot and record,” he adds.
While terraces are amazing open spaces for acoustic jams, recording can be a challenge thanks to the interruptions. The team at Gig Veda, however, don’t look at the sounds as disturbances.
“Sometimes just the tranquility of the strings and a gentle breeze, sometimes the hustle and bustle of horns from the main road or a dog barking in the background merge with the music. These elements provide a more relaxed vibe than a studio can offer,” they enthuse.
Pranav, meanwhile, has big plans for the future. He says, “Hyderabad has a very dormant music scene. We are looking to create visibility in as many different places as possible. Although right now we are just confined to the terrace and strictly to an online audience, soon you will see us in more public spaces. We are also looking to collaborate with artistes from other cities.”
They have begun exploring new spaces already. On Sunday, the team met at a store for a session. “The store’s ambience made for a perfect place to do our sessions,” says Krishna.
